In order to diagnose my off-and-on again, spotty home internet connection, I disconnect my cable modem from the Airport Extreme router and then connect my Macbook Air to it, so I can determine if the in-and-out connectivity problems is due to my router or Charter Internet. (I've already replaced my cable modem and my router, so I'm pretty certain it's the darn Charter Internet and I'm just trying to prove it).
The problem is that when the Internet gets spotty, it goes in and out for a short time. Sometimes ten minutes, sometimes an hour. And when I connect my Macbook to the cable modem, I have to reboot both my Macbook and the cable modem to make them talk to each other. But by the time that's done, 5-10 minutes later, the intermittent problems may have stopped on their own. I don't have any way of knowing if they stopped on their own or if rebooting the modem helped. It's very frustrating.
So, is there any way to quickly disconnect the router from the cable modem, connect to my Macbook, and get them to talk without having to reboot the modem or my Macbook? That would really help me.
